Cayuga Preventorium
The Ithaca Journal, Saturday, Evening May 27, 1939
As one of WPA's good works the new Cayuga Preventorium was turned over to the county Friday afternoon.
Lester W. Herzog, state WPA administrator, dedicated the $55,000 tuberculosis-preventive structure in the name of its builders "men to whom private industry couldn't or wouldn't give a job."
LePine Stone, Town of Ulysses supervisor accepted the building for the Board of Supervisors "for the undernourished children of Tompkins County."
Ceremonies Attend by 35
Dr. Norman S. Moore, Preventorium president, conducted ceremonies attended by some 35 person's in the new institution's living room.
You hear all the bad things about WOA and you know about the poor WOA projects, Mr. Herzog told the dedicatory group. The poor projects are always someplace else. Probably some other countries will call this Preventorium "worthless"..........
Traces Preventorium Work
Dr. Moore traced the Cayuga Preventorium's 25 years of tuberculosis-preventive work which he predicted will be "doubled" by the new establishment to open the first week in July.
James Conley field director of the Binghamton WPA district, introduced Mr. Herzog, looking back to the state administrator's first local visit in 1935 to confer on flood repair.
Officials and guests adjourned to the front of the new building to unveil a bronze plaque. Metal letters commemorated the institution "constructed by the Works Progress Administration, 1938-39; sponsored by the Board of Supervisors, Tompkins County."
Exterior complete
Commanding a plot that slopes 700 feet to Taughannock Blvd. and a few hundred more to the lake shore, the new Preventorium is complete except for interior decoration and furnishings. The management faces a furnishing problem since all available funds have been used in actual construction. Two donations have been received toward "extras".
The institution hopes to get underway the first week in July with 30 children. WPA workmen are still landscaping the grounds; building water lines and pumping facilities for the $3,300 water supply stems contributed by the Board of Supervisors.
