Ithaca Street Railway

December 12, 1887 was when the first street car made the first trial run eastward along State Street which belonged to the Ithaca Street Railway.

The formal opening was on the 27th of December. Ithaca was the 3rd operating railway system in New York.

In 1934 the railway was sold for $25,000 to Sweet and Oster, bus operators. On Memorial Day 1935 bus operations were announced to start June 3.

The last official streetcar rolled through Ithaca on June 22.

However, on July 4, 1935 the bus service was in such demand that the trolley poles were again run to meet the demand. The following Sunday one of the largest floods in the Ithaca area washed away part of the trolley poles. It was never repaired after that.
